We had Dexter at the shelter for a while. He was a big, lovable American Bulldog/Pit mix. Poor Dexter’s teeth were broken and worn from his life in an outdoor pen. He loved people so much and had been denied contact. His size and breed made him a long term project, but it paid off when a teenage girl saw him on the web. Now he lives next to a park and gets plenty of exercise and love.
From the adopters: “Dexter is doing very well, very happy and healthy. When he first came to us we were going to crate him, he somehow figured out how to escape a locked crate, so we don’t crate him. He does very well in the house alone, from day one he’s never had an accident in the house. The other issue we had was that he jumped out of our 2nd story window while we were home! He surprisingly didn’t hurt himself, the vet said he just jammed his shoulder a little. He found the accordion thing on the air conditioner moved and I guess he doesn’t or didn’t realize what heights were, and he must’ve jumped or fell out the window. Imagine my surprise at hearing a noise outside, looking out of the window and seeing Dex outside and knowing that neither me or my daughter let him out!!! Luckily he’s fine. He loves outside, he likes to run around our yard with us and his toy ball, and his been very good at not trying to run away since our yard has yet to be fenced in. He also loves his daily walks, we have a harness for him and he walks very well with it. He does go to the dog park sometimes, he doesn’t always socialize well with some of the dogs, but he did make a few friends to play with. He just gets so worked up and happy to play and he’s so big that some dogs don’t like him at that point. He likes to sneak on the couch when we’re not home, I guess that’s a typical dog thing to do! He’s great with people, he loves everybody!!! He’s always giving kisses. He’s learning tricks, (unless he knew them already). He speaks, he does play fetch, sits, shakes paws etc. He does bark if someone knocks on the door or rings the doorbell, so he’s getting to be a pretty good watchdog. He’d probably kiss somebody to death if they ever came in, but he does let us know if someone is there. Above all else he loves my daughter, that’s his person. He follows her around and he just can’t get enough of seeing her. He chose her from the day he came to our house, and she loves him right back. We are both very happy with Dex, he’s an absolute sweetheart and we’re very happy to have him as the newest member of our family.”
