2009 Kentucky Derby Fundraiser A Success :

The 4th Annual Kentucky Derby Day Garden Party that was held on Saturday, May 2nd, 2009 was a wonderful success which raised over $9,000 that will go towards EASEL’s goal of building a no-kill, non-profit animal shelter in Mercer County.

The event was held in the picturesque garden of Kate Tuttle, EASEL’s Executive Director. Guests were treated to a magnificent buffet dinner which featured delicious Kentucky Derby and Southern cuisine staples. The bar was stocked with Maker’s Mark bourbon to make the Derby’s most famous drink-the mint julep.

Music was provided by Ewing’s own “Thursday Night Jazz”, a trio of exceptionally talented local musicians who are only in high school which is surprising due to their vast talent and considerable showmanship while on stage. The highlight of the event, of course, was the horse race itself. Guests were able to bet on the horse(s) of their choice and the money raised from the betting was donated back to EASEL. “Mine That Bird”, a horse with only 50-1 odds, pulled off a stunner to be declared this year’s Kentucky Derby champion.

The event also featured a fabulous silent auction which pulled in over $1,000 in donations. Some of the fantastic items that were up for auction included authentic Swarovski crystal dog and cat trinkets, pet supply gift baskets, spa and restaurant gift certificates, beautiful hand painted portraits, delicious wine baskets and many more! A fantastic time was had by all, and was made even better knowing that each person in attendance was helping to give another chance at life to the homeless animals in Ewing Township.
