Director of Shelter Operations

EASEL is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal shelter dedicated to protecting the health and welfare of homeless companion animals. EASEL has the capacity for upwards of 75 animals at a time within the shelter and an additional 100 in foster homes

Reports to: President
Schedule: 5 days/week, including 2 weekend days per month (may include holidays) at least twice per month

Education: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years experience in animal sheltering, animal control, kennel, veterinary, or a similar field – must include budget management and direct staff supervision.

  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), a plus
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

POSITION DESCRIPTION This is not an executive, development or marketing position. Direct animal care and handling experience is REQUIRED, as well as knowledge of the law as it applies to animal welfare, OSHA regulations, budget management, and supervisory experience.

The Director of Shelter Operations at EASEL Animal Rescue League is primarily responsible for the management of daily shelter operations, including supervision and training of shelter personnel and volunteers, team building, coordination and supervision of animal care, adoptions, record-keeping, and ensuring high-quality customer service is provided to the public by all staff and volunteers. The position reports to the President to ensure the safe and humane treatment of all shelter animals while upholding the highest standards of care at EASEL.. The position collaborates with leadership to set goals, monitor work, and evaluate results to ensure the objectives and operating requirements are met and are in line with the needs and mission of EASEL, upholding our core values

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Daily management of shelter operations to ensure safe, sanitary, and humane operations consistent with shelter policies and procedures and in compliance with OSHA regulations
  • Oversight and supervisory responsibility for all shelter staff; prepare and direct daily shelter activities
  • Responsible for the training, supervision, and direction of the activities of the animal care staff (including volunteers) to maintain an approved standard of care and achieve the completion of daily work assignments following proper shelter, policies, and labor laws
  • Work with the medical team to ensure that medical needs are identified, animals are receiving timely medical and surgical care, and that treatments are being performed in accordance with policies, mission, and resources.
  • Ensure the shelter operates at a high level of quality while remaining fiscally responsible; provide input in the development and operations of the facility, and promote and facilitate proactive animal sheltering actions
  • Ensure high-quality customer service is provided to the public by all staff and volunteers
  • Represent EASEL in a professional manner forwarding its mission, goals, and objectives

Specific Job Skills:

  • Compassion and empathy for animals and humans
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills, particularly with a variety of client situations
  • Shows maturity, good judgment and performs duties in a timely and professional manner
  • Knowledge of State and Federal laws, ordinances, and regulations relating to animal care and OSHA compliance
  • Knowledge of safe/humane handling of animals of varying sizes, temperaments, etc.
  • Knowledge of shelter database management
